ELLOR®+ EDM Graphite Grades
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) – The full range of isostatic ELLOR® grades, from universal to ultra-fine grain graphite, is dedicated to electrical discharge machining, also known as Spark Machining or Die Sink EDM. ELLOR® is a globally recognized leading brand.
ELLOR® offers the most comprehensive range of EDM graphite grades on the market. With support from our experts, you can select the ideal grade for your project.
EDM Applications:
-
Deep cavity mold manufacturing
-
Forging dies
-
Die-casting molds
-
Injection molding tools
-
Turbine production
Key Factors in Selecting the Right Graphite Grade:
1. Wear Resistance (WR):
How long can the electrode maintain its detailed surface during sparking?
-
High wear resistance means fewer electrodes are needed, reducing production costs.
-
Under the same machining parameters, coarse-grain graphite wears faster than fine-grain graphite.
2. Metal Removal Rate (MRR):
How quickly does the graphite electrode remove material during EDM?
-
Generally, larger grain graphite results in faster material removal.
-
Fine-grain graphite removes less metal per spark but provides a smoother surface finish.
3. Surface Finish:
How smooth should the workpiece surface be?
-
Fine-grain graphite is ideal for achieving very fine, smooth finishes, with surface roughness down to 0.4 Ra (µm).
-
This is especially beneficial for complex shapes, where final manual finishing would be time-consuming and costly.
4. Machinability:
How easily can the graphite electrode be machined into detailed shapes?
-
Graphite quality can vary; for precision electrodes, ultra-fine grain graphite is essential.
-
The machining time of the electrode depends on:
-
The grain size of the graphite
-
The strength of the graphite
-
The complexity of the electrode geometry
-
With ELLOR®+, Mersen provides custom-fit EDM graphite solutions for every machining need—from roughing to finishing—ensuring efficiency, precision, and surface quality.
