Pantograph Carbon Contact Strips for Trams and Electric Locomotives
Mersen is a leading manufacturer of carbon contact strips used in pantograph systems. In response to the increasing current demands of DC-powered trains, Mersen has developed several high-performance carbon grades tailored specifically for high-current applications. This progress was made possible through Mersen’s participation in the 2007 world railway speed record, during which the French high-speed train was powered using a single Mersen pantograph carbon strip.
Mersen Grades:
-
Carbon materials tailored for pantograph current collection
-
Solid and lightweight impregnated carbon
-
Lead-free carbon grades (pure or copper-impregnated)
-
Proven lubrication properties – compliant with EN 45545 fire and smoke safety standards
Applications:
-
Railways (electric locomotives for passenger and freight, electric multiple units)
-
Urban transit systems (light rail, trams, certain metro lines)
In collaboration with universities and laboratories, Mersen developed the P2805 and P3210 models—top-tier grades in their category. These contact strips offer outstanding performance in demanding applications while preserving infrastructure integrity.
Both grades are available for DC and AC applications, and they fully comply with TSI (Technical Specifications for Interoperability) requirements.
